Am I Being Harassed At Work?

Spencer Law Group Sept. 26, 2020

Workplace harassment is a form of discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other federal regulations, including the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

There are many forms of harassment at the workplace and its not limited to occurring ONLY in the physical office.  With more and more people working from home, that harassment can still occur via email, phone calls, text and online meetings.

Harassment is “unwelcome” verbal or physical behavior that is based on race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), gender/gender identity, nationality, age (40 or older), physical or mental disability, or genetic information.  For each worker, what is defined by “unwelcome” can be very different but here are some common examples of bullying or harassment:

  • Spreading malicious gossip or rumors about you

  • Physical or verbal threats

  • Making aggressive or threatening gestures

  • Verbal aggression or insults, including (but not limited to) calling someone derogatory names

  • Sabotaging someone’s work

  • Making personal attacks based upon someone’s private life
